In a post, shared on social media and also sent to Teyit, the importance of onion was emphasized in the struggle for the Covid-19. The claim is based on the assumption that an onion can pull the germs.
When we search the story in the image in the search engines, we see that it is common not only in Turkey. Our findings are as follows:
- A similar story was analyzed by Taiwan Fact-Checking Center. The claim was confuted by Huang Shize and Yang Jiauri, from Yadong Hospital, known for their efforts for chronic infectious diseases.
- An article by Verywellhealth about the relationship between onion and the virus states that the claim does not have any scientific base.
- Since the beginning of the epidemic, there have been some claims about the effect of the onion on the epidemic. These were confuted by fact-checker platforms such as Newschecker and Factcrescendo.
- Also, there was a claim that onion could prevent influenza; however, Snopes, a fact-checker platform, confuted this claim.
There is not any suggestion about the onion on the website of the World Health Organization. However, it is possible to see their statement that there is not any medicine or treatment which is 100% effective for the Covid-19 by 23 March 2020.
Also, Prof. Alpay Azap, a member of the Coronavirus Science Board, stated that onion does not have any protective effect on the Covid-19.
If an onion stays at ambient temperature for a long time, bacteria grow in it. However, SARS-Cov-2 causing the Covid-19 is a virus, not bacteria.
In conclusion, the claim that the onion is effective on the viruses and prevents epidemic diseases such as influenza or the Covid-19 is not true. The post in question is an example of a fabricated content.
